Two Gentlemen of Verona
Everyone has been a Pepé Le Pew in their life at least once.
Chasing something that wasn’t yours, leaving a trail of chaos behind, completely convinced you’re the main character.
That’s basically this whole play.
Best friend sees buddy’s girl, goes full Pepé, betrays everyone, people flee into forests, someone puts on a costume, it’s a whole disaster.
And for what?
Eventually everyone crashes back together, a sorry gets mumbled, and somehow it’s hugs all around.
The thing is though — Pepé never once thinks “hmm, maybe I am the problem.”
He’s smooth. He’s romantic. He’s irresistible, obviously.
That’s the real joke Shakespeare was telling.
