Due to great success, The Last Ship has been extended with additional performances from August 29 through September 13.

The global star will play one of the lead roles in this extraordinary production, which will be performed exclusively at Carré for a limited run. The Last Ship is part of Broadway in Carré, Carré’s series of original English-language musicals from Broadway and West End.

Sting takes on the role of Jackie White, the shipyard’s foreman whose health is failing just as his leadership is needed most. In this very personal show, the artist immerses the audience in a hometown he was desperate to escape, a world where love, loss, and hope intertwine.

“I grew up in the shadow of the shipyard,” says Sting. “My father wanted me to follow him into the shipyard, but I dreamed of something else… I dreamed of escaping, and I did everything in my power to get away from that life. But the farther I got, the more I realized I needed to understand where I came from and felt I had to give something back. The Last Ship is my tribute to the people and the place that shaped me.”

A deeply personal musical by and with Sting

International music icon Sting brings his most personal work ever to the Netherlands: The Last Ship. This powerful musical tells the story of a tight-knit community fighting the decline of the shipbuilding industry in the northern English town of Wallsend — Sting’s hometown. It is a moving tribute to workers, family ties, and holding on to hope when everything seems to be falling away.

With stirring music from the album with the same name — partly new, partly familiar — Sting himself sings and performs one of the lead roles. Not as a pop star, but as a narrator, musician, and witness to the world he grew up in. His music spans multiple genres, from raw folk and rousing choruses to intimate ballads, and forms the beating heart of the performance. This is not a traditional musical, but a visceral and human musical drama about transformation and resilience in a changing world.

The original stage production premiered in Chicago in 2014, followed by a Broadway (NeilSimon Theatre) run the same year. A revised production was mounted in 2018 which in the UK, Ireland and various European and US cites. The original Broadway production was nominated for two Tony Awards: Best Original Score and Best Orchestration. The performance will be in English.

Alongside Sting, Declan Bennett, Lauren Samuels, and Annette McLaughlin take the stage for a new chapter of The Last Ship.

Dates: August 29 – September 13, not on Mondays. Matinees Saturdays and Sundays (not August 29).
