Adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel, the play centres on the convict McMurphy, who simulates mental illness in the hope that a transfer to a psychiatric hospital might ensure an early release. But McMurphy hasn’t bargained for the rigid regimen of Nurse Ratched, who dislikes their disruptive — though McMurphy’d say liberating — effect on the ward. The play shows how one person’s struggle against a ruthless system can grow into a powerful indictment of authority and conformism.
